Is the Hoplite app free for download and use?

The Hoplite app is free for download and for use, and this will always remain so.
The Hoplite app is a future-proof software which will be regularly updated and upgraded so that it always supports the latest version of major operating systems (OS). We at Hoplite are using our Key Manager every day, and like all users we want and need a reliable, stable, fast, and convenient software solution!

How do I get the free Hoplite app?

Just download it here.
The website will tell you which version of the application is best suited for your computer or your mobile device.

Which version of the free Hoplite app should I choose?

Just go to our Download page and download the suggested version of the app if you want to use Hoplite with the device you're currently using to read our website.
Otherwise select the app version corresponding to the operating system (OS) of the device(s) you want to use Hoplite with.
Note that versions 1.4 and higher for Windows, macOS & Linux are available both as installer software and as portable app. Before using the installer version, you must install it in your device. To use the portable version, just save the app folder anywhere in your computer and start the Hoplite app in the folder.

What platforms are supported by the Hoplite app?

Windows: The Hoplite app currently supports the 64-bit versions of Windows 10 and Windows 11.

macOS: The Hoplite app currently supports Apple's operating system from macOS 10.14 and onwards.

Linux: The Hoplite app supports the major distributions like Debian and Ubuntu with Intel/AMD x86_64/AMD64 CPUs. The oldest supported distribution is Ubuntu 20.04.

Android: The Hoplite app supports Google's mobile OS from version 6.0 (Marshmallow) for ARMv7, ARMv8, x86 and x86_64 platforms.

We strongly advise against using an obsolete operating system because this will expose your computer to potential attacks. If you can't do otherwise and the latest version of the Hoplite app doesn't work, you may try to use an older version of the Hoplite app at your own risk.
Older versions can be found here.

Why is Apple iOS not supported by Hoplite?

A special cable would be needed to connect Hoplite to an iOS mobile device. To be able to develop and manufacture this special cable, a very close cooperation would be required with Apple, and this might limit our liberty to develop the product further and to work on future evolutions.

How to update the Hoplite app?

The Hoplite app connects to the internet only once when you launch it. It asks our servers if a new app version is available for your computer or mobile device. If a new version is available, a message will appear to give you the possibility to download and install the new app version, which is strongly recommended.

It is of course possible to disable this automatic search for updates in the application's settings menu. In this case, the application does not establish any connection to the internet.

The Android version of our app is automatically updated via the Google Play Store.

How do I use Hoplite on multiple computers and/or mobile devices?

Nowadays, most people own several devices. What could be more annoying than using systems that don't synchronize or require complex configuration on each new device?

With Hoplite, everything is really simple: just unplug Hoplite from one system and plug it into the other. Once you opened Hoplite Key Manager using the Master Password, the Hoplite app continues to display all data until the application is closed, even if Hoplite is not connected anymore.

Is it possible and safe to use Hoplite with a computer which is not mine?

Imagine that you are visiting friends of yours and don't have your computer with you. However you need to login to some of your personal online accounts because you want to show something to your friends.
No problem, just connect your Hoplite to your friends' computer or mobile device, open Hoplite with the free application to access your data and log in to the desired service.

And if your friends are concerned about privacy and data security, like you are, they probably have their own Hoplite too, and their computer or mobile device will already have the free Hoplite app installed!

However, we advice against using Hoplite on any public computer because it could be spied on.

How should I use my Hoplite on a daily basis?

Please refer to the Getting Started page. A comprehensive tutorial is also included in Hoplite's application help.

How to choose the right Master Password for you?

The one and only thing you need to remember with Hoplite is your Master Password. It locks and protects all your data much like the key to a safe. So choose it carefully. Here are a few recommendations based on the most recent studies about password security:

• Your password should be as long as possible. A short password (less than 8 characters), even one composed of complicated characters, can be broken by brute force with a conventional computer. A password composed of several words, or even a complete sentence, will take much longer to be broken. To make things easy for you, Hoplite does not impose any size restriction for your Master Password and all characters are accepted: you may use accented characters, spaces, special characters from other languages and more.

• Your Master Password should be easy for you to remember, because you should keep it only in your head. Writing down your master password in an unsafe place is like leaving the keys in the ignition of your car when you get out.

• Someone who knows you should not be able to guess your password. This way, attacks based on social engineering can be avoided.

• Hoplite allows you to change your Master Password every time you store data in its memory. If you are in doubt about the security of your current Master Password, feel free to change it.

How to protect myself against fake website URLs?

Hoplite also secures all data associated with a password, such as username, website address, notes...

For this reason you can qualify a website URL, i.e. make sure it's the right one, and enter it in Hoplite Key Manager next to the corresponding password. To recall the URL just double-click on it in the Hoplite app, and the website will open in your default web browser.

Using this Hoplite feature has a double interest for your:
• Protect yourself against deliberately misspelled hacker links.
• Access websites faster and easier: no need to open a web browser, to enter the name of the website in a search engine and find the right link to click on.

What should I do if I forget my Master Password?

Hoplite makes no concessions to the security of your data. There is no way to recover your data if you have forgotten the Master Password!

However, Hoplite is designed to be very easily backed up to one or more other Hoplites you can keep safely at home or in a safe. In addition the backup tool built into the free Hoplite app allows you to specify a different Master Password for each backup.

What happens in case I lose my Hoplite?

Don't worry: if you have followed the recommendations in this FAQ relative to Master Password, your data is safe and no one will be able to retrieve it.

If you have a backup Hoplite, which we strongly recommend, you just need to restore your data from the backup Hoplite to a brand new Hoplite. Please refer to the Hoplite backup guide for more information.

How do I initialize my brand new Hoplite at first use?

Please refer to the Getting Started page. A comprehensive tutorial is also included in Hoplite's application help.

How do I search for a specific word within a tab in Hoplite's app?

You can search for a specific word or phrase in any tab of the Hoplite application. To do so, type the word to search in the search bar at the bottom left of the tab. Then click the "Next" or "Back" buttons to step through all occurrences of the searched terms.
Alternatively you may use following keyboard shortcuts: Ctrl+F to access the search bar, F3 to step forward to the next occurence and Shift+F3 to step backward to the previous occurence.

For security reasons, for example if someone next to you is looking at your screen, the passwords stored in Hoplite are excluded from the search scope.

Is it possible to generate passwords with the Hoplite app?

Absolutely. All passwords stored in Hoplite's secure memory can be automatically generated by the app. In fact, we strongly recommend that you use the cryptographically secure algorithms in the Hoplite app to create new passwords for the following reasons:

• You don't have to find a password, which can be laborious depending on the rules (uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, special characters, etc.). The Hoplite app offers an advanced mode that allows you to specify these rules.

• A password generated by the app is immensely more secure than one created by a human. A password created by a human can be statistically predictable, while a password generated by the app is cryptographically secure. In addition, each password generated by the Hoplite app is unique so you don't have to worry that a stolen password can give access to multiple accounts.

• You no longer need to know or remember these passwords since Hoplite takes care of them for you. The only password you need to remember is the Master Password for your Hoplite.

Please refer to the help included in the Hoplite app for practical details on how to generate passwords automatically.

My passwords and data are stored in an Excel or Word file. Is it possible to import them into Hoplite?

Absolutely. Please refer to the help included in the Hoplite app for instructions. This feature is only available in the desktop application, not in the Android app.

How do I transfer the data stored in my Hoplite to another Hoplite (for backup or other purpose)?

Before you go any further, you must know the Master Password of the Hoplite to be duplicated in order to proceed.

An easy copy utility is included in the desktop application. It is not yet available in the Android app. To call this utility, just go to the "Device" menu and select "Copy device". A very simple wizard will guide you through the process. This wizard allows you to securely back up the content of your Hoplite to a 2nd Hoplite that you keep in a safe place.

For increased security, the wizard allows you to choose another Master Password for the 2nd Hoplite where the data will be duplicated.

How many data entries (passwords + associated information) may be stored in Hoplite?

The Hoplite memory can store 130,000 characters. This represents over 1000 passwords with an average of 100 characters per password and associated data.

How to reset my Hoplite?

You want to give or sell one of your Hoplites to someone, but you want to erase your data first?
Nothing could be simpler: The free Hoplite app includes a wizard that allows you to reset all the content of your Hoplite in a jiffy! But beware, all data in your Hoplite will be permanently lost!

How to edit the name of my Hoplite?

You have the possibility to customize the name of each of your Hoplites so that you can easily recognize them within the app. To do this, call the "Device" menu and select "Change device name".

What kind of USB cables work with Hoplite?

Hoplite features a new generation USB-C connector. Your Hoplite works with USB-C to USB-A cables (for older computers) and with newer USB-C to USB-C cables, regardless if those cables are compatible with the USB 2.0 or USB 3 standard. USB On-The-Go (OTG) adapters for older smartphones and tablets are also supported.

The only USB cables that are not supported are cables dedicated to charging devices because they don't include the necessary wires to transfer USB data.

What kind of USB cable is provided with Hoplite?

Hoplite comes with a USB-C to USB-A cable for maximum compatibility with computers. The supplied cable supports the USB 3.0 standard although Hoplite only requires USB 2.0 connection. This way, you can reuse the cable for other devices.

Warning: Please note that smartphones and tablets do not have the same type of USB connector as a computer. Due to the large number of possibilities, we can't supply all possible adapters with Hoplite.

Please go through the following steps to connect Hoplite to your mobile device:

• If you own an older smartphone, you'll need to get a USB On-The-Go (OTG) adapter to connect the USB cable provided with Hoplite.

• If you have a newer smartphone with USB-C connector, you have two solutions: Either you add a USB-C to USB-A adapter in order to use the cable provided with your Hoplite, or you use a single USB-C to USB-C cable.

You'll find more information about compatible cables here.

Note: Hoplite's first production batch provides a USB-C to USB-A cable supporting USB 2.0 standard only. It will work with USB 3.0 devices but will be slower than a USB 3.0 standard cable.

What is included in Hoplite's packaging?

Hoplite's packaging includes the following items:
• 1 x Hoplite Key Manager hardware
• 1 x 11.8" (30cm) USB-C to USB-A cable
• 1 x natural cotton pouch to store your Hoplite and its cable
• 1 x paper sheet with web link to download the free Hoplite app

What happens in case one of both memory chips is faulty?

It is very unlikely that one of the high-reliability memories fails, however we have foreseen the worst: Hoplite is equipped with two memory chips, so that you always have a backup copy.

The Hoplite app will automatically detect if the content in both hardware memories is different when opening your Hoplite or writing to it. In this case the app will be able to display the contents in each of both memories (if possible), so that you can choose which content of both memories to keep.

If a memory is really failing, we recommend you to get a new Hoplite.

Note: The same process is automatically started when a power failure encounters at the precise moment when you save data in Hoplite. This allows you to restore the data prior to the storing attempt. In this case, the memories are obviously not damaged.

What is the size of the memory in Hoplite?

130,000 characters. Please click here for more info.

Where are my personal data stored?

Hoplite is the only solution on the market that ensures you the highest level of confidentiality. How is that possible? Because the data are encrypted by your Master Password, which only you know, and stored only in Hoplite's highly reliable memories, and nowhere else!

Hoplite does not use any cloud storage, nor backup on the computer or mobile device. No copy is let in the operating system keychain nor saved in your web browser.

You can very easily back up the contents of your Hoplite Key Manager to one or more other Hoplites to make as many backups as needed.

Why is there no ID and password autocomplete available in my web browser?

We want to limit as much as possible the interactions between the Hoplite app containing your data and a web browser that can be affected by many flaws. That's why Hoplite offers no extension for web browsers.

For the same security reason, there is no link between the Hoplite app and the web browser that opens when you double-click on a website URL in the application.

Is Hoplite really waterproof?

The whole Hoplite inside is filled with electronic-grade silicone to make it completely waterproof. The USB connector is also waterproof. This makes Hoplite much more water resistant than many everyday waterproof products. Hoplite's waterproof standard is IP68.

Why does Hoplite have no Bluetooth or WiFi facility?

Hoplite has no Bluetooth or WiFi connection for the following reasons:

• There is no need for a battery, which is a huge advantage since batteries are damageable and dangerous and have a short lifespan. Moreover batteries are tedious to manage in terms of power load and pollution (because of the lithium they contain).

• The cable connection is much more reliable and secure: No one can intercept your data remotely, even if they are permanently encrypted.

• Hoplite is completely inert when not connected, which makes it extremely resistant and durable.

How does Hoplite protect my personal data?

Your data safety is our goal!
Hoplite encrypts all your data using a double cascading encryption made of the most secure encryption algorithms: AES-256-GCM and ChaCha20, along with quality key derivation functions. The entire cryptographic system has been validated by French security researchers from I3S lab.

The data are encrypted from end to end, even on the USB bus, and are only decrypted by the Hoplite app.

The whole electronics in Hoplite is oversized to withstand the test of time. The data are stored in redundant, highly reliable memory chips lasting over one million write cycles and 200 years of data retention.

The high-quality electronics is protected by a rugged, all-aluminum, weatherproof and waterproof housing that withstands all abuses of everyday use and more.

Are Hoplite memory chips really reliable?

The memory chips in Hoplite have been very carefully selected from the most robust technology currently available in mass production.

These memories are guaranteed for at least one million write cycles, which can be translated into the following figures:

• For a normal use of 10 writings per day, the minimum limit of number of cycles is reached after more than 274 years.

• For a very intensive use of 50 writings per day, the minimum limit of number of cycles is reached after more than 55 years.

Many Hoplites have been undergoing intensive testing for years to verify the reliability of the memory chips. At the time of writing, the most advanced Hoplite test has reached 2,617,196 write cycles without any problem.

The data retention time of these memories exceeds 200 years thanks to the ultra-robust technology that durably fixes the charge in the silicon.

More information about the EEPROM memory technology we use in Hoplite can be found in this document.

What is about backdoors?

We encourage you to monitor network traffic, disk access, USB bus, and any other aspects you deem relevant to ensure by yourself that there is no backdoor in Hoplite.

Is Hoplite a future-proof solution?

Unlike today's leading brands of electronic and computer equipment, Hoplite is lifetime maintained!
The source code will be made open source so that the community can maintain it as soon as the product is established.

What permissions are required by Hoplite's Android app?

None! We are really committed to guarantee the confidentiality of your data.

Is the source code of the Hoplite app open source?

Hoplite's code will become open source over time, as soon as the market is ready for this decision.

Why is there no geolocation feature in case my Hoplite gets lost?

We thought long and hard about this concern and came to the following conclusion: If you lose your Hoplite, your data are not only safe because your Master Password is strong, but also not lost because you have a backup in a safe place.

Making it possible to trace the geographical location of your Hoplite could become dangerous for your privacy. Indeed, it would probably be possible to hijack the system to trace non-lost Hoplites, and thereby track users.

Although geolocation would be a very convenient feature, we decided to discard it because the security and privacy of our users is our top priority.

What does the name Hoplite mean?

A Hoplite was a heavily armed soldier in ancient Greece, the equivalent of a knight in the Middle Ages. The Hoplite had the best equipment of his time: The most solid, the most efficient and the most reliable one!

Hoplite Key Manager is designed in his image to protect your most important data efficiently and in the safest possible way.

Where is Hoplite developed & built?

Hoplite is a 100% French security product.
The design, development, validation and manufacturing are carried out near Nice, in the South of France. Hoplite is distributed near Marseilles, in the South of France.

Data sovereignty is a subject of great importance for the security of us all. With Hoplite Key Manager you don't have to entrust your data to someone else!

Is Hoplite an environmentally conscious product?

Respect for the environment has taken a prominent place in Hoplite's design. The electronics has been carefully designed to be free of harmful materials and rare earths that are sources of conflict, such as tantalum, manganese, lithium, cobalt and others. The case is entirely made out of aluminum, which is much more resistant and much less polluting than plastic.
The robust design and construction prevent programmed obsolescence: Hoplite is designed to work for as long as possible to avoid renewing it like a common smartphone.
